ElectroMotive Diesel's answer to the genset switcher craze is to stick to what it does best - build single engine units. Based on the 710 engine block that was already in common use, EMD developed the 710ECO package, intended as a repowering option for existing locomotives. At the time of the initial rollout in Sept. 2008, the available models were based around two engine models - the 2,150 hp, 8 cyliner 8-710G3A-T2 and the 3,150 hp, 12 cylinder 12-710G3B-T2. One year later, the offering has found homes in five different varieties on four Class I railroads and one commuter line.

As part of the ECO rebuild benefits, EMD claims fuel savings of up to 25% and reductions in lube oil of up to 50%. In addition, EMD touts greater interoperability of parts and other inventories over their genset competitors. At least in part, the industry has embraced the approach. The nearly 30 units ordered as of mid-2009 have vaulted the company into second place for order volume among the green locomotve builders covered on this site.
